Step#8: Evaluate

Step #8: Evaluate (Submission: FRIDAY, MAY 6th – REVISED) This is a reflection on the process and the final PSA produced during the project. It needs to discuss both the technical side of your work (how “good” is your final PSA and how you can reflect on your work with the hardware and software) as well as its content (how effective you feel your final PSA could be at educating and/or persuading your intended audience). It needs to look back over the entire process – from the first investigative conversations your group had to the completion of your individual PSA – and evaluate your performance at the various stages, your development throughout the project, and the impact that your final PSA could have on your own life as well as the lives of those in your chosen audience. Finally, it will ask you to discuss yourself in light of the IB Learner Profile. The profile has 10 characteristics towards which IB learners should strive, and you will need to choose the 3 you feel best describe you and your efforts leading up to (and including) your final PSA (skills and learning), and then justify each of the 3 choices you make.

I do not really like my PSA video…I am satisfied with it but I do not think it is the best video I ever made. Using iMovie was really fun and I think the software is really cool. But my video did not need many special effects and because of the limited time, I did not have time to play around with the special effects in iMovie. I don’t think the story played a big role in the effectiveness for the audience. At first I put the message in the beginning but I moved it to the very last. This is because we tend to remember the ending of things. My message was a question (are you being yourself?) and a reminder (don’t lie to yourself). I think putting these two powerful messages last makes up for the effectiveness of my video. My audience might think about themselves and reflect after they watch my PSA video. Although my group focused on sexual orientation, and my story in my video is about a homosexual girl, the messages could be connected to one’s self in general. I really hope that my PSA video will somehow affect an audience member to change for the better.

My intentions for the final product of this project was very vague, so I wasn’t really sure about what my ideal product would be. The storyboard had to be changed a lot of times to match our convenience and to cut time. I really like to video tape. Every time we shot a scene, I knew exactly what angle and direction the camera had to move to capture the moment and feeling. Because we all wanted a message we could send to our audience that would leave them thinking, the result of our brainstorming was “are you being yourself?” From now on I think I will become more aware of who I am and act honestly and be myself. The project could have been interesting if there was no time limit (as in 60s) and each of the group members had to have an original idea that would be put together as one whole PSA video.

Communicators: Sometimes there would be a disagreement between Mayuko and YJ. One would want this while the other wanted something different. To keep the peace while not hurting anyone’s feelings, I talked to them patiently that we could get both of these things to make everyone happy. It worked and there was no problem and all our friendship stayed intact. I communicated my ideas while being open to others and finding a consensus to solve the problem.

Open-mindedI am open-minded because I grew up as a Catholic and I understand myself as a Korean Catholic. But for this project our topic was sexual orientation. My religion forbids homosexuality because God created women to always be the partner of man. And homosexuality goes against our belief. Even though I understand this, I am open to other preferences and I do not discriminate homosexuals. Because the world has changed a lot since Biblical times and discriminating people because of their taste is wrong, I am unbiased to both my religion’s opinion on homosexuality and to homosexuals. I am in between. I am open-minded.

ReflectiveI have reflected a lot while finishing my PSA video. After putting in the messages “Are you being yourself?” and “Don’t lie to yourself”, I started thinking about if I was being myself and if I was lying to myself. Although the focus was sexual orientation, the messages apply to anyone and everyone. By thinking about our messages I started reflecting about myself and this has taught me to “be myself”.

Step#7: Create 2

Step #7: Create 2 (Submissions: each day, ~TUESDAY, APRIL 26th to FRIDAY, MAY 6th – REVISED) Identical to “Create 1” except that it will document the video editing process. Things needed (some examples; not an exhaustive list): description of steps followed, tools and resources used, successes & difficulties, changes made to the chosen individual plan, and so on.

I finished it in one day and it took me a few hours.

My movie is pretty straight forward and the font almost never changes. I’m proud of my format because of this. I used the tool called “Clip Trimming” to cut out parts of the individual clips that I do not need. This was pretty easy and I worked hard and focused to find tools that I needed. I found out that I had to click this button with a “T” for text (a slide where I can put only words) and I had to drag the theme I wanted into the upper rectangle (I do not know what is called…) and I could drag it around. Also I made a clip black and white with a little help from Mr. McEwen. I decided to put the “Are You Being Yourself” at the very end, which I think makes it more memorable. I added two lines that say “Don’t forget” and “Don’t Lie To Yourself”, to add on to the “Are You Being Yourself” part. I also found an instrumental version of a song and when I dragged the iTunes file in, I didn’t need to do anything else to it. iMovie does things I want mostly automatically! 😀

Step#6: Plan 2

Step #6: Plan 2 (Submission: TUESDAY, APRIL 26th – REVISED) Identical to “Plan 1”, except this will be based on each person’s interpretation of how the PSA should look. Things needed (some examples; not an exhaustive list): reference to tools and resources (including software and any audio-visual material to be used), new storyboards which show editing order as well as elements such as transitions and extras to be included (created and uploaded as images), timeline/schedule of what’s happening when, and so on.

I have used iMovie a couple of years ago, and I was very dependent on the teacher and my friends for help. But because I have used it before, I think I will get the hang of it once I start.

Storyboard:

– “Are You Being Yourself?”

– Mayuko likes YJ

– Christina does not like lesbians

– Mayuko lies on Facebook (to fit it)

– Mayuko becomes depressed

– YJ accepts Mayuko – becomes friends

– Credits rooolll

Because I do not have time, I am planning to do it in one or two days/ few hours.

Step#5: Design 2

Step #5: Design 2 (Submission: TUESDAY, APRIL 26th – REVISED) This is a return to an earlier stage (once all the group video work is done and each person has a copy of the raw footage) to allow each person to consider the different ways that they might, in the end, create their own version of the PSA. This will need to include descriptions of the intended audience and desired effect(s) of the PSA, but should also make reference to some of the initial research and data collection that the group did as well as elements of the group video work which might have impacted you and your choices. Most importantly, you’ll need to explain why you make the choice you do from the possibilities you present, and in doing so will likely need to make reference to some of the very first discussions the group had and what your position was at those times.

I want to make a PSA video that the ninth graders next year can understand easily. The message I want to convey to them might not be taken seriously, but I hope to have a message that is unforgettable. We took footages that made a story, and this idea has not changed from the beginning. At first, though I wanted to make a PSA video meant for older (high school/college) students, because I haven’t experienced a lot of high school life or any college life at all, I want to make a video that concentrates on getting a message to an audience younger than myself. Because of the difficulties our group and I went through, I feel rushed and so I do not think I can make a video that will be taken seriously by students older than me. I hope I do not disappoint myself too much…

Step#4: Create 1 [4]

Step #4: Create 1 (Submissions: each day, ~FRIDAY, APRIL 8th to FRIDAY, APRIL 22nd – REVISED) This is a detailed description of the process the group goes through while shooting the video footage. This should be done each day that any sort of video work is completed (in class or not), and it needs to describe the day’s successes, difficulties (and how they were/why they weren’t overcome) and degree of adherence to the group’s plan (making explicit reference to the plan and giving detailed explanations for any changes made to that plan). As always, it is crucial that you highlight your role and/or contributions to the group’s work each time.

There were no difficulties today!! 😀

We worked hard and finished shooting/filming. But we did not follow the storyboard for every single shot, we shot the remainder of the story while building up from the ideas of the storyboard. Also we filmed it differently than planned so that no other equipments were necessary. We made it more simple and straightforward. YJ wants to make a video without any dialogue or sound (like no talking), so we took some parts silently. On the other hand, Mayuko wants to make a movie with sound and dialogue so we took the same parts with sound. I think I am going to make a movie without sound.

I acted a little and filmed too. There was one part that I was in, so other than that time, I filmed Mayuko and YJ acting.

Step#4: Create 1 [3]

Difficulty: MAYUKO FORGOT THE STORYBOARDS!!!!! AGAIN!!!!! She is going to go home and scan the storyboards. Or else I am not forgiving her…ever…(I am kidding).

Success: Errr…umm…hmmm….

Step#4: Create 1 [2]

Step #4: Create 1 (Submissions: each day, ~FRIDAY, APRIL 8th to FRIDAY, APRIL 22nd – REVISED) This is a detailed description of the process the group goes through while shooting the video footage. This should be done each day that any sort of video work is completed (in class or not), and it needs to describe the day’s successes, difficulties (and how they were/why they weren’t overcome) and degree of adherence to the group’s plan (making explicit reference to the plan and giving detailed explanations for any changes made to that plan). Our greatest difficulty today: Mayuko forgot to bring the final storyboard. *Sighs*

So, we ended up taking a lot of videos and shots that we remembered from the storyboard. We got a lot of work done but I’m worried that it isn’t enough. We have to work hard to finish the whole story on Friday. I hope we finish because that is our last day…

I will take the storyboard from her, next time we meet…!

SUCCESS: in filming and not making much bloopers… 😛 Also we filmed the part where we gossip about the gay girl and the part where the gay girl writes on the facebook news feed about hating gay people to impress the straight girl. This sounds very confusing…but it makes sense.

Our main plan was to film anything that we remembered from the storyboard. This was completed and the main plan for next class is to bring the storyboard (Mayuko) and to work efficiently to finish filming.

My contribution: I acted!!! I am the friend of the straight girl (YJ), and we filmed the part where we gossip about the gay girl (Mayuko) who likes the straight girl (YJ). I also filmed some parts to improve Mayuko’s ideas.

Step#4: Create 1 [1]

Step #4: Create 1 (Submissions: each day, ~FRIDAY, APRIL 8th to FRIDAY, APRIL 22nd – REVISED) This is a detailed description of the process the group goes through while shooting the video footage. This should be done each day that any sort of video work is completed (in class or not), and it needs to describe the day’s successes, difficulties (and how they were/why they weren’t overcome) and degree of adherence to the group’s plan (making explicit reference to the plan and giving detailed explanations for any changes made to that plan). Today, we did not do any sort of video work! 🙂

Instead, because of Mayuko’s absense the other day, we revised the whole storyboard and put in more details and ideas for camera angles. I do not have the new storyboard so I can’t upload it here, but there are a lot changes from the old one. I gave ideas of the shot angles and Mayuko wrote them down on the storyboard. I think we will shoot with my ideas for the shot angles. I will not be in the movie as much as Mayuko and YJ, and I will probably handle the camera more than Mayuko and YJ, so I contributed ideas for the shot angles.

Step#3: Plan 1

Step #3: Plan 1 (Submission: TUESDAY, APRIL 5th – REVISED) This will be a list of steps and collection of images detailing how the group is going to create the common raw footage to be used later on (when each individual is editing their own version of the PSA). In terms of movie-making procedures, this needs to be a detailed storyboard w/characters, script, shot angles and lengths, locations, costumes, etc. (uploaded images). It must also indicate a preliminary schedule for the group listing both the order in and days on which things hope to be done and needs to make reference to other resources to be used (camera equipment, extra people, other tools). Finally, there should an explanation of why planning decisions were made and what your individual contributions were at this point.

Because Mayuko wasn’t with us to discuss about the storyboard in detail, we do not have a lot of things done. The dialogues in the storyboard (up there) are the informal script. The things they say are the main ideas of the script. Because Mayuko wasn’t here, I think there is a very large chance that we will change the storyboard when Mayuko comes back. It might not be in the storyboard (up there) but there will be closeups on certain characters to emphasize the mood and the main points of the story. For costumes, we will not need any, because it is just normal high school girls in the story. I think it would be important to make sure that each girl has a specific color of clothes. For example, I will always wear gray, Mayuko will always wear red, and YJ will always wear blue. This is just an example and an idea. We will be shooting mainly in the hallways. I will need to remember to bring my camera… I am afraid I am going to forget about it.
